You don't download a torrent file that contains the video file, you download the video file itself. But they do have torrents after all, so that doesn't matter. Well shit, wouldnt direct downloads be better (as far as DCMA complaints)? I hate torrents but I never knew that those direct downloads existed for movies. Honestly doesn't matter. Direct link is only better if you don't like downloading torrents, however I'm almost certain that youre safer with torrents than a direct download. Also keep in mind that speeds are a lot better too when torrenting. Either way torrents > direct download IMO. It's a personal preference and what you consider easier, that's all.

No way are you safer with torrents. Your IP address is visible to any copyright holder who wants to see it, and not only are you making an unauthorised copy, you're also distributing it because it's P2P. Direct downloads are only going to be an issue if the copyright holder somehow got hold of the log of IPs that had accessed a file. At least I think that's how it works. In terms of speeds, I get all my stuff from Usenet and it always maxs out my connection, as do the majority of torrents if there's enough seeds.

Also, direct downloads are hosted by the site and in their servers so if a site gets busted..then what? You're logged right then and there for whoever. I wouldn't say direct downloads are safer than torrents regardless, mainly because they're both risky in their own ways especially on the site you use. I'm not sure what usenet is, and I never used it so if that works then that's another solution to it all. Anyways, I prefer torrents because they're more reliable and safer with uploaders. Plus, understand that torrents are only bad if you're downloading the illegal shit or sketchy shit. We're in different countries too, though I think we're pretty similar in terms of "punishment". The only thing that really happens here is you get an email or letter from your ISP stating to stop downloading stuff or they cut your internet. Luckily enough, I'm with an ISP who hasn't sent me one letter (knocks on wood) in my 10 years, so my opinion is somewhat biased for torrenting. Either way, VPN is the way to go no matter what if you're gonna be downloading/watching "illegal" stuff. I'm almost positive Aquafina uses one, which is why I didn't mention it.

What are your thoughts on ThePirateBay? I always use that, lol. I personally only use tPB if I'm really desperate for something. The reason I stopped using it is because it's notorious as fuck, and everybody has an eye on that. There's also a lot of sketchy torrents, like companies uploading fake movie torrents just to catch whoever is downloading... Either way, I stopped using TPB when they got busted a few years back and after that it's just been a roller coaster. However, I do give them all props for fighting the government and actually being able to stay up.

I get too many pop-ups when I download now. Think I'm just gonna pay for the streaming services and wait for stuff instead

Why not uTorrent? That's what I have always used, no other reason than its the only one I knew of. You're right, I do use a VPN but the fucker likes to just randomly shut off on me sometimes which is why I got that stupid email about the Lego Movie.

A couple years back with their newer updates, they got really sketchy with installs. Maybe it's changed? I just remember Torrent Freak reporting it, however since then I use qBittorrent.

Usenet is kind of like torrents mixed with direct downloads. It's not very popular as setting it up a kind of complicated if you don't know what you're doing and you need to subscribe to a downloads provider. I think there's also something about people who use it not talking about it openly to avoid it getting shut down. It's good though. You get the P2P and scene releases almost immediately of just about everything. You can also configure your client to automatically download the latest episodes of a series you're following as soon as they're available.
