Good list. Haven't seen all of these. Have you watched the (fairly) new Netflix documentary series, Five Came Back? I just started it. I have not (i don't have Netflix). What's it about?

It's five filmmakers (Spielberg, del Toro, Greengrass, Kasdan, and Coppola) talking about the five filmmakers who documented World War II.

I fully agree with you on Full Metal Jacket. 2nd half of the movie is just...fine. 1st half is incredible.

War movies are my absolute favorite. Too many for me to actually write a real list but this is some of my favorites in somewhat of an order lol
Saving Private Ryan Schindler's List (might as well add The Pianist as well) Full Metal Jacket The Patriot The Great Escape Hacksaw Ridge Black Hawk Down We Were Soldiers Enemy At The Gates (shitty made movie but I loved it as a kid)
I'm sure I'll add more as I think of them...
And it's not a movie but if it counts Band of Brothers skyrockets to the top for me.

I do agree with a lot of this list, some of them I haven't seen yet, so I have to withhold final judgement. Before I chose my career path that I'm currently studying towards, I originally wanted to become a history teacher, with an emphasis towards military history, especially around WWII/Vietnam, so seeing your list really brought back memories of first watching a lot of these films. Films you may have missed would have to include: We Were Soldiers, All Quiet On The Western Front (1930's version, unless you initially meant that one in your honorable mentions), Defiance, Sergeant York, Judgement At Nuremberg, The Great Raid, et al. I remember the first time watching Schindler's List and pretty much remaining outwardly unemotional (inside I was just getting torn up and depressed) and when it got to the end when Schindler was lamenting that he could've saved more Jews buy selling this and that, I lost it and cried for the rest of the film. Powerful. Props for including Eastwood's companion films. I remember seeing both in theaters and enjoying them for the stories they told. I love the war films that tell the stories and don't end up becoming the "rah rah" clear cut good guy/bad guy, America wins type of film. As always, read the books that inspired the films!!!

Any Black Hawk Down love?? It's in the Honorable Mentions! It's a great movie, but there's no way it can break into the top ten with these other timeless classics. It does get a lot of props, though, for staying as accurate to the story as possible (as far as i've researched). Always appreciate that.

Zeke, i haven't, and when i first heard about it i really wasn't thrilled because 1) it's directed by a terrible person who somehow was able to resurrect his career, and 2) the very Christian theme is not something i'm all that excited about watching. With that said, it seems like the reviews were better than i expected and i have heard more good things than i first thought i would. (That said, the handful of my middle-aged female co-workers who saw it loved it exactly because of the Christian theme.) Anyway, yes, i'll watch, because generally i'll watch anything good enough to be nominated for an Oscar. And i'm keeping my mind open. I might just wait til i don't have to pay more for it. For me, Ghosty liking a film is the best review a film can get. Also, I'm not a Christian and I still loved it, it did not have any Christian-propaganda feel to it imo. Hacksaw Ridge finally premiered on HBO tonight so i was sure to watch. I liked it a lot, but boy, it sure was heavy on the religious stuff, so i'm going to disagree with what you said. I dunno, okay, maybe "propaganda" wasn't in it; but yeah it didn't go five minutes without a Christian reference. Hey, it was true to the story so i'm not knocking it; i certainly don't want to see a true story twisted. But to me, it slightly diminished the quality of the film. He could have had just as strong moral convictions without praying to god every waking moment.
