In a interview with Nocturne, Herman Li released a statement to the question of 'gimmicks for bands to stand out'.
Quote: 'To be honest, I think that it's great that some bands set themselves apart because I'm sick of all these bands trying to sound the same. I mean I thought metalcore was going to die years ago. It's 2017 and people are still coming out playing the same thing. Fuck. I can understand that it's cool. It's kind of a scene, and you go out and have a good time. But, musically, they are not challenging themselves because maybe they haven't grown into it yet. Some bands like Bring Me The Horizon, I never liked their music, but I can see they are challenging themselves and grown to another level. But some bands just keep doing the same thing. They're not doing their own style, they keep doing a style that everyone else is doing. That's fair, it takes the time to grow but it has to be organic, so I'm contradicting myself. How can people grow if it's not organic, that's what they want to play and that's how it is? So don't listen to me.'
I somehow feel what he means, i can't get into modern metalcore as well (i rather stay with 90s/early 2000 metalcore). But as well, i didn't knew Dragonforce was still a thing.
What's your opinion?

I also get what he's saying in terms of metalcore as a whole right now. Its hella stale and pretty cookie cutter. Metalcore is supposed to be a sub-genre but even then its also a blanket term for a lot of different artists. Like, Kublai Khan and say...Bullet For My Valentine. Both categorize themselves as "Metalcore" but they couldn't be the farthest from each other. Overall, irrelevant webzine asking the questions no one cares about to a guitarist who finds comfort in his writer's block because Power Metal is corny and he knows he can get away with it.

They peaked with Through the fire and flames since it was on Guitar Hero, but when they played it live it sounds like farts. Nice job having your own sound niggie.
Agree with Ghosty and Blacksalt

I don't really understand what he's getting at. You can only adapt it so much before it becomes a different genre.
It's funny because I always file DragonForce under derivative speed metal trash.

It's funny because all if not most power metal/guitar wankery bands sound the same to me.

So let's recap: a member of Dragonforce calling out other bands for being a gimmick?

Agree with Ghosty and Blacksalt Yeah this guy is a dick and pretty overrated. Fire and flames is sick song to play on guitar, but according to the live videos they aren´t able to nail it live either. The guitarists are very talented and great, but it´s too risky to play it at that speed. Thats the most annoying part on this guy: he is good, risks to much, fucks it up and at the end he still acts like he is an god on the guitar.

Wow, just watched the first 30 seconds of a video they just released and it was unbearable once the singer chimed in.
I get what the guy is saying, it is difficult to stand out without a gimmick - and definitely catapults certain bands over others. But I believe quality music will eventually get noticed no matter what.

Would anyone know who Dragonforce is if it wasn't for Guitar Hero?
