Can't go wrong with some old school death metal. Tales of Blood This was on my check-out list. It didn’t hit me hard, but it’s solid. It’s kinda refreshing to hear some death metal that isn’t massively over-produced. Recently, it seems like new death metal bands mostly jump into the Tomb Mold, cavern-core, thick and chunky wagon. It was cool, but now it’s overdone. This band sounds so incredibly dry in comparison that it’s almost a shock to my ears. Kinda reminds me of that dryness that Benediction had on their classic albums.

What are your guys thoughts on this LP? I was getting ready to post it, which tells you a lot about where I stand on it. It’s not unique sounding at this point, but it certainly is well-written and well-executed. When I heard it, I knew that it had potential to climb into my frequently played albums of the year.

I spun it once this afternoon and I totally agree it’s not groundbreaking, but it is very well executed. The songs themselves flow really well and I didn’t get bored with it.

Doesn’t hold a torch to the new Tomb Mold album. Tomb Mold are kinda becoming the leaders of the death metal scene. The previous album was great but not mind blowing. This new TM album, however, is incredible.

There’s always a lot of great death metal releases coming out, especially on 20 Buck Spin as of the last year or two, but let me highlight something else that came out this year that is really stellar and deserving of death metal fans’ attention.
Critic: These French newcomers released this EP back in March and it is incredibly fun to listen to. There are some very cool, unique riffs, often a bit technical. It is very energetic, the songwriting is great, and the drums just hit the spot! Hard to believe this is their first release, as this sounds incredibly polished. Please have a look at this one. These guys deserve more attention.

I think Wretched Illusions from Creeping Death and Hacked To Death from Detherous are the two albums I'm the most excited for when it comes to death metal this year.
Creeping Death - Bloodlust Contamination
Detherous - Practitioners of Pain

Alright, here’s some cool death metal history.
Old Funeral: This began as a pre-Immortal project (the famous black metal band) and featured both Abbath and Varg Vikernes (yeah, that murderer!) in the band, as well as one or two others who would go into being in Immortal with Abbath. This is from a 3 track EP and it’s nasty old school death metal! Really digging it! Varg is on vocals here if I read correctly. So here’s another excellent death metal offering from what would become black metal giants. Just like the first Darkthrone album, which was also fantastic death metal.

Gorebringer: I don’t normally post melodic death metal. This one I’m posting mostly because I believe it will appeal to more people than my usual posts, as it is quite well executed, and I think it will especially appeal to those who really like The Black Dahlia Murder. This drummer is super fast, and I love his blasting. Vocals are exciting, not monotonous. Melodic lines are very nice.

Exhumed: A longtime favorite band of mine, this is a deathgrind band, with Matt Harvey at the guitar and vocals. Everything he does, I like. They have a new album coming out October 4th, and I’m stoked. Here’s a track from it that was just uploaded by Relapse Records, their longtime label. For those who followed this band, this sounds more close to their earlier material, like Gore Metal and Slaughtercult, which means that the song is very quick, to the point, and just packs a massive punch. Their previous albums had longer, more death metal, and less grinding on them, so this should be a fun “relapse” for them. Haha

Creeping Death - Bloodlust Contamination Detherous - Practitioners of Pain I’m with you on these. Detherous has leaked already at this time. Found it up today. Also I listened to its title track. Ballsy Demo-Hammer worship!

I bought it on Friday and can upload it if the version you have is just a web-rip. Let me know.

Ripped to Shreds: I actually brought up this band a year ago in this same thread for their debut full-length. I've just finished listening to the new EP from this year called Demon Scriptures. Andrew Lee wrote and performed all of the music. The live-lineup is based in Taipei, Taiwan, but Andrew himself is in California. Why should you care about this band? This dude is ultra talented. Writes old-school inspired death metal and it sounds masterfully done. Combines the elements of the Swedish death metal scene with the Florida scene, creating a nice hybrid which sometimes sounds reminiscent of the classic Entombed Left Hand Path era and at other times sounds like modern day Skeletal Remains. Check out the EP. It's short!

Disowning: This is an international band, mostly French and Canadian members, so let’s just called this French Canadian death metal. You know that famous technical death metal scene in the Quebec area? These guys are able to fit into that bunch quite well. They don’t really label themselves as technical death metal, nor would I necessarily, but there are definitely very technical elements to their sound that make them stand out from the average death metal that comes out these days. The riffs are often all over the fretboard, not built out of same-note patterns like a lot of bands. The result is a bit of a groovy sound to their music that I really like. Drummer is excellent, with some fun fills from time to time, but really he just knows how to blast and how to groove. Vocals are your standard low growl, but definitely done well.
