Heresy - Band from Costa Rica, they released an album called “Blasphemia” this year, and it definitely made my “best of...” list for this year. TEENSY bit samey in sound, but I def got Slayer/Sepultura vibes from this. stringypoo , you’d probably like these guys. Not bad. If I’m basing my feelings off this song alone, I’d call these guys the Obituary of thrash metal. I liked the band’s sound. I’m not a huge fan of the vocalist, but he really shined in the second half of the song, so I have mixed feelings about the dude. I love the moshy, punchy feel of the band. I’m going to have to create a thrash metal thread now. In addition to being a wannabe death metal encyclopedia, I am a huge thrash metal nerd. I had a thrash thread in the old TDM but this year I didn’t listen to much thrash so I didn’t start one yet. Now I feel it’s time! To be fair, many people do consider thrash metal a part of traditional heavy metal, but it’s highly debated, and I think it’s more simple to just start a specific thread for thrash to keep from mixing a lot of things into specific threads. Share your thrash metal suggestions if you have more! I always want to hear more! Thanks for sharing Heresy, tao!

Sumerlands: Vocalist Phil Swanson is well-known within the modern heavy metal community, fronting some solid acts. This band was my first time hearing of him however, and is their only full-length thus far, released in 2016. The guy reminds me of Ozzy Osborne at times, but never too strongly. The album here is well-varied in its material. Provided you have an interest in the style, there is guaranteed something on here for you. This is a favorite track from this album. Might I add that there are a number of NWOBHM elements in this band, too.

Have you listened to Visigoth’s new album yet? I posted a song in this thread a bit of time ago. Although their approach is different from Sumerlands, generally I have found that people who enjoyed this band also really enjoyed Visigoth. Considering Visigoth made my top 10 easily this year, it’s an easy recommendation for me to make.

I have that album in my iTunes, but unfortunately it was one of the MANY victims in there of albums I didn’t have enough time to listen to. Now that you’ve reminded me, I’ll be sure to throw it on my iPod the next time I move stuff around. That and Micawber...

Wrathblade: This heavy metal band draws much inspiration from Manilla Road, the band which I posted earlier in this thread twice already. In some way, I feel that they’ve fallen into unfortunate obscurity, much like Manilla Road, too. This is unfortunate, as this band really cranked out some incredible tunes on this album, which is centered around Poseidon. The guitars are epic, the vocals are unique and engaging, the drumming fits and sets an ominous tone. I’m in love with this album. If it had only released two months later, it would have been in my top 10 of 2018 easily. Here in “Submerged,” we have a track about the meeting of man and civilization with Poseidon and impending doom.

Eternal Champion: This band features a member of Power Trip. I think it’s really cool when bands of specific styles play in other successful bands of very different styles. There is also a member of Sumerlands in this band (I posted them earlier in this thread). This band does epic heavy metal, not much unlike those in the Manilla Road camp. I’ll share two videos because their first track is a banger, but it’s not representative of most of their songs.
If you like hardcore, this first track might be the closest thing you’ll find within epic traditional heavy metal. Hahaha
And for a taste of their more common material:

Riot City: This is not too far off from being in the style area of Traveler, who already released one of my favorite albums of the year. This is speedy, high octane heavy metal with an INCREDIBLE vocalist. He has an awesome range with giant energy, not a weak point in his vocals on the album! This is sounding pretty damn good to me and likely to be a contender for my favorite albums of 2019.

Ancient Empire: The internet seems a bit split as to whether or not this is pure heavy metal, power metal, or NWOBHM influenced heavy metal with thrash in it. Whatever it is, I think it fits this thread well, and it really kicks ass. The band is only about three years old, and released an album each of the three years. This is from the second album, the first track of the album. The songwriting of this band is phenomenal. Some compare this band to Iron Maiden a bit, which I can definitely understand. Vocals are melodic, but not overly high like people tend to complain about.

Forgive me for spamming Traveler periodically. I can’t help it. This album will probably end up being my favorite of the year 2019 just by virtue of how often I replay it. These days, I just can’t get this song out of my head. That chorus is so damn catchy, and I love the vocal rhythm it holds where he sings “Speeeeeeeeeeeed Queeeeeeeen!...”. So good! Okay, personal blurb out there. I’ll return to my little hole and continue listening.

Honestly the only ones I really listen to are Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and King Diamond.

Honestly the only ones I really listen to are Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and King Diamond. In some way, that’s really all you need. But I have minor issues with each which leads me to find more to listen to. Hard to truly claim anything is wrong with Maiden, but their songs got so proggy with Dickinson, and I just wanted them to churn out more bangers like “Aces High.” Priest is amazing and dynamic across his discography, but I can’t put a finger on it but I get bored listening to it sometimes. King Diamond has some phenomenal records. Sometimes I just want something less falsetto. Haha. But really, those three are great bands. Have you listened to Traveler or Riot City yet? Those bands are more straight to the point than Maiden, possess the electricity of Priest’s best era, and well, not quite the vocals of King, but yeah, I’ll rep those two bands all year. Can’t emphasize enough how fun those records were.

Maybe it’s cause all the dudes that I know that do it are super lame people lol. The only one i’ve dug in this century is savage master, but they feel a lil dirtier than everyone else. Lol I never get bored of those three. Feel ya though, Aces High absolutely fucks.
