Took me a while to recall where I had heard that track you shared, tao, but then I remembered by the time I finished it. You had posted this track in the “What are you listening to” thread many months ago. It made an impression on me then, and again this time. I had never heard of Boom Boom Satellites, and why would I? I have only ever watched two pieces of anime: Attack on Titan Season 1 and all of Death Note. With that being said, I agree that there is something really unique about the way electronica is mixed here with rock. Would definitely be a unique show to witness, especially if they use some back-lighting the way they do in that music video. A show like that also seems like it would wreak havoc on the eyes. Lol. I’m with ya, it’s unfortunate for the untimely death of vocalist/guitarist, but thankfully they’ve got a nice output to enjoy. For my song post, I’m going with something easy to digest this time, unlike most of my previous posts. Red Fang left a huge impression on me with their album in 2011, one large enough I managed to gather money together and buy the album on iTunes, something I rarely do in life. Back then, I still largely collected CDs, but this album was hard to find at the time in my area. Relapse Records did a fine thing in enlisting Red Fang to the roster. This was stoner rock/metal goodness, and perhaps what I’d like to highlight even more is the fact that this is easily my favorite music video ever made. With the premise being Relapse Records sends them a check for $5,000 to shoot an awesome music video and the video showing them spending the budget, it’s a hilarious run with a surprising build if you haven’t seen it yet. The song itself is a nice relaxed riff-fest with some good, not great vocals. I love this band, and this video still makes me laugh 8 years later.

Nah, not dead; just couldn’t figure out what to post here without sounding samey. That Red Fang track was deeeelicious. I like that retro sound they got going there.
For my pick, I’ll go with a band I’ve been a fan of ever since they released their first album waaay back when. The Joy Formidable is a Welsh band, and their sound is kind of a mix between alternative and shoegaze.

You know what’s funny about the Skycamefalling track you posted, v9733xa? Several days prior to your post, I had created a list on another music site of my most favorite metalcore albums that I’d heard to date, and specifically prefaced it by saying that because I was “late” to the genre (c. 2008-ish), I hadn’t yet heard the “classic” albums of the genre, but I’d get around to them. Aside from people losing their hipster shit over my list, saying my taste in metalcore fucking sucked, saying I had to listen to Integrity, Botch, Converge, Zao, etc. I asked people to rec me albums so that I could reverse engineer myself into the genre, and somebody recommended that specific Skycamefalling album to me. Haven’t listened to it yet, but I will soon.

Alright that band was a lot better than i thought they would be, given your brief description. Oh, i will never listen to it again, absolutely not. But do i hate it? Nope! And like i love to say, it's better than nearly anything on the radio these days. Peppy and yet bleak at the same time, kinda a neat combo. I get a modern The Smiths or The Cure vibe from them. That is decidedly not terrible. A nice twinkly guitar line that easily could be subverted by a good screamo band.
They probably wouldn't have any fans of the singer was ugly though. Doesn't that suck? Male band members can be wretchedly ugly and no one cares, but a female lead needs to be practically perfect-looking so the band gets any attention. Meh.
You know what? You inspired me. Let's get some grittier female vocals here.
Akaname only had one incredible EP with a singer (then they became an instrumental band), but it's a wild mix of grindcore, sludge, and technical metal, and some hellacious vocals. This is the closing track from that single 2007 EP of theirs with lyricist Kallie Sparkles -- love the name. And i've probably spun this record 25 times.

Well that was fucking cool. Thanks for sharing Akaname. Probably my favorite band choice from this thread. Never heard them before but I love the dynamic writing and the gnarly performance by that female vocalist. Gotta admit, as much as I fucking love the ladies, I hate female vocalists 99% of the time. Doesn’t matter if they’re doing cleans or not. Can’t really explain it, but it’s not my thing. This was different though. Very cool! Gotta get this EP! Noticed she’s not listed as a vocalist (nor is anyone) for the band currently and she seems to be credited only for vocals on this EP despite the band having other material.
As tempting as it is for me to post more High on Fire due to my current listening trends, I will refrain. Lol
Hexecutor. Solid band name. French thrash metal band, completely unknown when they released this album in 2016. I discovered the album by chance in December 2016 and found it incredible and instantly reported it to Metalcrypt, the other forum I’m on, with some notable people on staff to help get momentum for unknown bands. Instantly this band got lots of attention from various directions since then despite still seemingly lesser known. Umm, this band slays, and there ain’t much else to it. Their riffs are incredible. Solos are badass. Vocals are rough like I like them, and drumming is fast and skilled. I’ll leave two videos from this band. First is the most well-known track. This is an 8 minute epic with a massive guitar solo trade off at the end the size of Judas Priest’s famous “Painkiller” solo section. Riffage here is melodic and innovative for thrash metal in the old school vein.
And for a track that just gets straight to the fucking point, and some of their fastest playing, some Reign in Blood riffage, a cool thrash breakdown-like figure at the end, and some building intense vocals, check out this one:
I must continue to rep this band. Severely underrated. Incredibly talented group.

stringypoo - Man I am so close to mega digging this but the vocals just turn me off to it. It does so much right though. These guys are obviously insane musicians and it's really easy to get caught up in the way they just zoom forward into the track and lean on the idea of being fast and loud and really fucking good at their instruments while doing it. My grouses with the vocals were easily ignored during some of the more marching grooves, like from ~1:30 to 2:00 in Macabre Ceremony, but then the shriek at the end pulled me right back out haha. Drums were easily MVP, guitar solo was well done and not overblown, whole band aesthetic comes together really nicely. I listened to it twice. Good song for the thread. I'm submitting the song that's been stuck in my head for the last 2 weeks. I'll post a moshing song next time but this time one of y'all gets to enjoy some art pop from Glass Animals.

That Glass Animals was really good. I really liked how they didn’t overpolish the track and let it naturally unfold like it did. Feels like something that would be playing in the background as one drove through downtown on a lazy summer day. Good isht. If that was for a lazy summer day, then my pick would be for the hazy neon night that follows. essien and Ghostchant, you might like this one.

Happy to see you contributing to this actually cool thread, essien. This type of K-pop doesn’t tend to resonate with me much, but yet I can’t deny its excellence in mastery of execution of the main points of a good pop song, if that makes sense. It’s catchy and an easy listen. I have a feeling many, if not all of my students in the International School here have heard this song, as they have shown me that they have a large and diverse appreciation for various Asian pop musics. Korean pop artists are probably the most popular here. Nice song. Felt like it got left out of Persona 4 Golden (Really similar sounding songs in that game!), which is easily a top 10 games of all time entry for my personal list. I was prepared to share something epically metal, but you’ve inspired me to share my one true Asian pop artist interest. I have never followed more than two Asian pop stars, mostly because it doesn’t interest me that much. Shiina Ringo is easily my favorite Asian pop star. Japanese. Unlike many Korean and even Chinese pop stars, Shiina is not glamorous, or wildly attractive (although not bad looking by any means). Instead, she brings a very artful approach to pop music, often dark, smoky, slow and dirty jazz-oriented, sometimes even using traditional Japanese instruments and stylings. Hopefully this music video appears on the west side of the globe after I post it as I know for sure not all of hers will appear in the West. Pretty sure I’d seen this one before. This is one of her biggest hits, and one of several renditions of the song she has recorded over the years, not on any of the albums. This is a video exclusive. tao, you might like this one, but it’s just my feeling. Her voice isn’t amazing, but incredibly accurate in her difficult lines.

It was rather interesting, composing a song in a “classical” sense and layering an almost jazz-like vocal on top of it; it worked out better than I would’ve thought possible and both really complemented each other. I swear to you, I knew about this song before it was used as an anime opening; I even watched the PV for it back in the day. However, with YouTube being YouTube, things disappear over time, and the best version of this song I could find is this. L’Arc~en~ciel was one of the first J-rock bands I got into, and even today they’re a guilty pleasure, as they’re more “rock-lite” in certain aspects. I just really like how positive the song is and I really enjoy how clear and emotive vocalist Hyde sounds here.

Nice positive number there. I enjoyed the vibe of the song, and you gotta love those air-guitar-worthy shred-lite guitar solos in the mix. Cool song, not sure which anime it has been paired with but might like to check it out sometime.
Swallow the Sun just released their latest not many days ago. I’ve somewhat avoided this band for a long time and now I’m kicking myself for doing that. With that being said, this is apparently the most mellow album they’ve released. I’ve looped it many times and it is captivating from beginning to end on first listen just as much as on fifth listen. The guitarist wrote this album as a dark, mellow, hopeful, and deep eulogy to his girlfriend who died of cancer three years ago. The personal touch that adds to this record is sincere and bleeds from every pore. So knowing that is helpful listening info. Melodic Doom Metal is never this interesting to me, and I am in love with this record. Every detail shines in this album, the drums and their natural decaying properties, the sparse but meaningful writing, string arrangements, vocal trade offs, and everything.

Welp, I definitely don't like that a lot. I wasn't sure where it was going. I suppose this is, like, a extreme black metal band? Death doom? Hm, it didn't all work for me. You really have to like those vocals since they dominate the song so much. I certainly listen to a few classic doom bands (i.e. Isis and Neurosis) but something about this group was missing for me. There are a lot of layers to the song that maybe would catch me on a second listen.
Well, wait, let me listen to it a second time. Hold on.
--
Okay, there is something to appreciate here i think. But it's not for me. Maybe i'm just fickle but i kept waiting for this crescendo that never came. Talented group though, and top-notch production.
Let's get some hardcore back in here.
In Pieces were one of the greatest melodic hardcore bands of all time. As opposed to other stalwarts of the genre from the turn of the century and into the early 2000s (With Honor, A Static Lullaby, Comeback Kid), In Pieces had these epic scales to their songs, often ranging from 4 to 5 minutes, in what unfortunately only amounted to one EP and two full-length albums. Their masterpiece, Learning to Accept Silence, was massively influential albeit not a commercial hit at all. They way they blend screamo, hardcore, and punk in complex songs with atypical structures was way ahead of their time, and this was a band i listened to over and over again in college, hoping to find others just like them.

v9733xa, not surprised about your take on the vocals on Swallow the Sun. Originally, I hated those vocals too, which is why I avoided the band until this release. But my tastes have changed a lot and I accept things I didn’t before. Anyway, impressed you even did a second listen given your initial feelings. That’s awesome. In Pieces...somehow you have now posted two bands within this time area with Skycamefalling the other one if I’m not mistaken, both of which I have never heard of. And it is weird because back then I believed I knew everything that went on in those rings of post hardcore and metalcore. Clearly I was wrong. I had A Static Lullaby’s discography, and while it was a nice sound, it didn’t satisfy me as deeply as a band like In Pieces would have, had I heard this back then. I like the epic arrangement to this band’s song structures. I like that they don’t just bounce back and forth between part A and part B. They through in a part C, D, and even a part E. Cool stuff. I don’t care for the vocals anymore, but I still dig it. I was inspired to respond with the song that got me into harder music, Thrice’s “To Awake and Avenge the Dead,” but then I can’t find the studio recording version, so now I post one of my long-time obsessions in place of it. Thursday. There are really only two bands that are not metal that I really don’t see myself ever tiring of. Those would be Dance Gavin Dance and Thursday. Lyrically, Thursday always cut deep with incredible poetry and darkly realistic themes. The vocal delivery of Geoff Rickley is powerful, even though he was never an amazing singer. In fact, whiny as fuck sometimes. This was the first Thursday song I ever heard, also the first album I got. It blew my mind. Became my favorite song for years and years. I wore it out though, and now it’s just another great tune to go back to once a year or so. Hahaha
