A few other random points: - The killer's MO reminded me a lot of the Golden State Killer and I'm sure he was at least part of the inspiration. www.metro.us/entertainment/movies/is-the-clovehitch-killer-based-on-real-eventsTurns out it's based on Dennis Rader, who killed 10 people in the Wichita, Kansas, area between 1974 and 1991. That's the guy who featured in Season 1 of Mindhunter on Netflix, otherwise known as the BTK (Bind. Torture. Kill) killer. He was also a cub scout leader, was part of a church group, and he used his job as a security alarm installer to find his victims. Ah, thanks for sharing this. Even more unsettling to know how closely this was based in reality.

1. Was the film what you were expecting?I pretty much agree with essien 100% on this point. I never bought into the "it was Uncle Rudy" spin and always seemed pretty obvious to me that it was actually the father. 2. What was the most unsettling part of the film for you?Agreed with essien again. The photo shoot scene was extremely creepy and really showed the depths of his depravity. 3. What did you think about them not reporting Clovehitch's identity to the police at the end? Were they justified or selfish?Selfish, I think, but I can see how people would view their actions as justified. Unmasking the killer to the public would have been better for the community as a whole in the long run and aided the healing process; their actions don't really provide any sort of closure or resolution to the victims' families or the community and allows Clovehitch to continue living (metaphorically) in the shadows. 4. Do you think Clovehitch's son shot him or did he shoot himself?I think his son shot him, but, again, I could see it going both ways. I hadn't considered the possibility that it was as suicide either until I read it here. 5. Did you read any social commentary into the film?I didn't initially, but I like essien and v9733xa 's contributions to this point of discussion. Good analyses and I agree with both of you in retrospect. I enjoyed it as a whole, and I'm glad that it didn't play out exactly like I thought it would going into it.

Just a few days until the deadline, guise. Here's a few discussion points - in spoiler tags because spoilers. 1. Was the film what you were expecting? 2. What was the most unsettling part of the film for you? 3. What did you think about them not reporting Clovehitch's identity to the police at the end? Were they justified or selfish? 4. Do you think Clovehitch's son shot him or did he shoot himself? 5. Did you read any social commentary into the film? Really enjoyed this slow-burner so another excellent entry into the Film Club, kudos! 1. I really had no expectations for this other than assuming it might be lame because Dylan McDermott was in it (His filmography is sub-par at best although I liked him in American Horror Story) 2. The bit where he tries to shoot his son near the end, but ends up trying to strangle him instead, that genuinely shocked me 3. I think if i was in their shoes, I'd consider it as well. Imagine all of the media attention you'd get; you'd never live down that "he's the son of a serial killer" tag ever again. Given how widespread the internet is as well, it's not like you could move to the other side of the country and still not expect it to be out there either 4. I assumed the son shot him, but I think the point raised below about him allowing it is a good one. I imagine when you've got an addiction and you know you can't self-discipline, it's easier to let someone else make the decision for you 5. Not particularly, has anyone else? Didn't realise this was from the writer of Cop Car and Robot & Frank. Loved both of those as well. They could/should be films to follow up with at some point if people haven't seen them I’ve actually seen Robot & Frank, and thought that was a nice little indie film. Very pleasant.

1. Was the film what you were expecting? I wasn't expecting myself to enjoy this movie as much as I did. It had it's flaws, but it also had fantastic story telling. Definitely a sleeper hit for me. In my experiences, a lot of the IFC can suck, but this one shows that there's some gems sprinkled in there.
2. What was the most unsettling part of the film for you? I honestly didn't find too much of it unsettling. I'm not one to get unsettled too often, mainly because I watch a lot of horror flicks, and as this one goes, it's fairly tame in a lot of those aspects.
3. What did you think about them not reporting Clovehitch's identity to the police at the end? Were they justified or selfish? I'm indifferent in this one. I think as a civilian, you should be reporting in any crime as big as this, but I can also see their stance in their community being so strong that they'd want to keep this under wraps. The kids name is already tainted because they think he likes BDSM, now think if they found out his dad was the killer. The whole family would up and move to the other side of the country to not be able to escape this. The kid handled it for the greater good of the family (mainly his mother) and their reputation.
4. Do you think Clovehitch's son shot him or did he shoot himself? From what I gathered, I think the kid shot him. We've already established that we can't trust the father with a gun, obviously, so making him be the one who pulled the trigger on himself seems like a stretch.
5. Did you read any social commentary into the film? A lot of this movie, at the start, made me laugh. When she found the porn in the truck.... Thats honestly the normal kind of porn I look at. I'm in the fetish scene. I'm in the rope scene. I know how how he tied the girl in the end... I've literally done almost the exact same thing on my friend. It all seems hilarious to me.
I'd give this movie a 7.5/10
Can't recall who picked this, but good one. I enjoyed it.

This was one of the best serial killer films I've seen and I think also qualifies as a coming-of-age film, which is unique. The scrapbook of BDSM photos was well-made and creepy, and matched with McDermott's performance, made for a somewhat realistic and unsettling depiction of a serial killer. I read that it was based on a real serial killer, though the director wouldn't say which, not wanting to bring attention to the person. I understand this is the director's debut and I will certainly be on the lookout for whatever he does next.
