So my wife drives about an hour away each week to take care of her disabled dad. This past Friday she was out there doing some grocery shopping for him and had a sharp pain and ended up going to the hospital there and was admitted overnight. They ended up performing emergency surgery on her on Saturday to have her gallbladder removed. So I had to take a leave of absence from work to be able to cook, clean, and take care of the kids was she is down and out. So now I've been rather stressed because I have no clue how we're going to get our bills paid.

I’m glad she got in and got that taken care of, but yeah, this all will put much more pressure on you. Just take it one day at a time. I’m sure the answers to the problems will be revealed. Brace yourself for tough times, but know that it will get better. I hope your wife will recover quickly. Some say that is a similar surgery to appendectomy, from which I was out of the hospital after five days rest. And even after that, there was a little pain remaining and discomfort preventing my walk from being normal. She might experience a similar recovery path, I’m thinking. But anyway, wishing for the best for you guys! I know that’s tough.

So this little ausshole has been my life for the past two weeks, she has her challenges but I honestly feel like getting her was the best thing I've ever done. She's so sweet and loving and goofy, and wicked smart. Her name is Sylphrena, but I call her Syl for short.

Needed a short break from everything and I bought a ticket to Milan for next Sunday for € 20,-. Booked a hostel for € 30,- and it turns out that there is a music venue underneath and Turnover are playing there so that is lucky coincidence. AC Milan is also playing against Genoa that day and I want to go there as well but due to the Corono virus outbreak there every sporting event in the area has been postponed. So I'm hoping that game goes on but I highly doubt it. Either way I'm stoked for this short trip.
Edit: Corona virus fucking everything up and every concert in the area of Milan is canceled from today until the 1st of March so I hope by the end of this week there is some positive news about it.

Damn! The trip sounds great, but yeah! The Coronavirus has simply ruined a lot of things, especially regarding travel! Some of my coworkers in the international school here in China (North American and New Zealanders, not Chinese coworkers) went on vacations all over Europe and Asia when the Chinese New Year break began January 20th. Many of them have been country hopping or stranded, living in hotels ever since. Some were kicked out of the countries they were visiting because of their work visa ties to China. I’m really glad I view China as home now, because traveling is tricky right now. If I had flown back to US back in January, I’d still be there, unable to fly back. Doesn’t sound terrible unless you consider I want to be with my wife and 8 month old child. So I’m glad I didn’t travel.

Being confined to the family apartment in Shanghai hasn’t been all bad. It has for one allowed me to tap back into my interests more fully. At the same time, this has been quite a massive conflict in my head, as I realized that I have too many interests to fit into one day! It always leaves me feeling slightly unsatisfied.
-I’ve got a growing list of new albums I want to check out/listen to, which has become quite easy despite needing a vpn to use YouTube because the Chinese app, Xiami, tends to quickly add much of the underground metal that leaks, providing me a super convenient way to listen.
-I have a burning gaming desire these days, always eager to advance in Witcher 3 (logged in about 45 hours in the last three weeks) and continue playthroughs aiming for completion in The Binding of Isaac Afterbirth.
-Football games are long but I also try to get in one game per day, currently watching week 2 games from this XFL season.
-Food. Oh goodness, there are these “walnut flavored peanuts” in a large bag someone in the family gave us. These peanuts are in the shell, easy to open. And for some reason, this flavor is just so damn special that I can’t stop thinking about them all day long! I sometimes spend 30 minutes in each day shelling and eating them.
-Then of course, spending time with my son. He’s changing a lot, and I’m fortunate that I’m home with him during this outbreak. Now I never miss a thing with him.
So yeah, it’s exciting to get back to finding my interests and identity through this time. I severely miss the gym, which due to the outbreak I haven’t gone since January 18th... but that will change eventually.

Dutch foreign affairs changed that area to a risk zone and won't advice going there only if you have to go there. Sadly however, this means that airlines still fly and that if I want to cancel my flight I don't get a refund. I got a travel insurance but I checked and they only refund if it's claimed as a no fly zone and flights are going to get canceled. Now since it's € 20,- I will probably let it go and just don't fly but I'm still going to try and get it back haha. Sadly I can't change my Ryanair flight since I'm already checked-in online. Also the Ryanair customer service chat sucks so much. I went in on online chat and asked about the outbreak and if this is going to affect my flight and if it was possible to change my flight to another city and all I got was ''I see you are checked-in online and this not possible'' and then the chat went dark and I couldn't ask questions anymore. Either way. Still bummed since I wanted to explore a new city for a few days and now I'm probably going to be stuck at home since flights to another city on this short notice is expensive.

I left the family apartment for the first time in forever yesterday to go inside my new apartment in Shanghai for the first time. This not only marks a new place for me, but it’s the first time I can call myself a home owner. Prior to this, I’ve always rented apartments in Arizona after I left home, and I’ve lived both in school-provided apartments in Kunshan and the family home in Shanghai since coming to China. There is much work to do in this new apartment, as the building itself is all brand new and the inside of the apartment is empty and barebones. Probably won’t live in it for another 10 months or so, but it’s a big step to finally retrieve the keys to my own place in Shanghai.
The funny thing is that while it’s a big thing, it didn’t feel all that special since I’ve basically lived in two new apartments since coming here, one of which I live in during my time in Kunshan that is so similar to my new one in size and overall design. But yeah, it’s still cool. This new place is set up for two bathrooms and two bedrooms, but we plan to only have one bathroom and use the other bathroom space as a storage/practice room for violin and cello lessons/stuff. Hopefully that will turn out well. Also, I’m super stoked because across the street from this apartment is a mammoth of a mall almost finished, which has 11 floors if I remember correctly. It will also have a subway line inside which will be my nearest way to get on the metro. Really cool stuff I’m looking forward to.

So the Kindergarten/Cradle/Cresh/whatever it is called gets closed on Monday for at least 5 weeks due to the Corona-Virus. Funny thing is I still have to attend work. We will have an emergency group running for the children of nurses, doctors, cops, firefighters and those jobs that endanger people when not attend to work. So the children which aren't even greatly attacked by Corona are double safe now while me and the other employees are still in "danger" because we have to come to work. Also the parents of the children in the emergency group are probably more risked to be in contact with the virus since they're doctors and nurses... thanks "Niedersächsisches Kultusministerium".
