v9733xa I hear you. I've typed out and deleted like 8 posts since the changeover. Most of it just doesn't feel like it's worth taking up the space. SB was good for those idle and offhanded throwaway thoughts. I wonder if this thread would be more lively with that kind of content, or if it'd just be all cluttered and junked up. Yo also gratz to your brother and the rest of the family on the new addition!

except people talking about the new Korean movie that they stole? You do realize this is a music piracy forum, yeah? Lol. Your post reminds me of reading old Deadlocked Winter posts. I personally just feel like I don't have much to say, or the things I'd have to say would be me talking alone (heart rate zone training and climbing). I lurk and keep in touch with some people from the forum outside of it, but I just don't listen to as much new music as I used to.

There are a dozen ways to support a band, from merch to shows to crowd-sourcing a special event/release, etc. But for a film, if you don't buy a ticket or rent legally or purchase a copy, you're hurting that director and production company with no way to redeem that lost value. The production company Annapurna lost like $50 million last year with films that received Oscar nominations and were critical darlings. They're not going to take chances on good movies anymore if people don't go and support them financially. Sure, stealing a new Marvel movie is not gonna hurt Disney one bit. But stealing an arthouse film that a company spent tens of millions to acquire for U.S. distribution hoping to turn a profit? Yeah, that sucks, and you suck if you do that. You want everything to just go straight to streaming with no theatrical release? A few weeks ago there were three weekends in a row with just a single wide release of a film. While total movies are higher than ever before, the number of them in theatres is half of what it was just 30 or 40 years ago.

I agree with this, I am a cinephile and see a large amount of movies monthly in theatres. It’s amazing to just watch how many fewer and fewer people are going to watch movies than even 10 years ago.

I for one never go to movies anymore, I think the last thing I saw in theaters was the last Fantastic Beasts movie. I'm not entirely sure what happened, maybe it was Hollywood relying too much on reboots and adaptations and taking a step back from original stories, maybe it's the fact that I have zero interest in superhero movies, or maybe the rise in quality of TV shows and my preference in their longer format to tell a more complete story, or maybe with how much reading I do that satisfies my fiction intake. I don't even watch movies at home except the few I seem to rewatch on an annual basis.
I'm not saying there aren't people making quality and original films anymore, I am saying that from my perspective they are well on the decline. And with a lot of them going directly to streaming services, that even more reason to stay in. Especially when I own a comphy ass recliner, a 4K 52 inch TV and a sound bar that cranks out amazing quality, the popcorn is cheap and I can drink beer.
I will concede that there is still something special about theater popcorn...

I was walking around in the shopping area near my new school-provided apartment in Kunshan after work today, and I saw a coworker, the PE teacher, sitting down with a representative in the lobby of a gym here. I like the guy, Jarod, despite not really talking to him much in the year I’ve known him and also despite the fact that he and I aren’t quite similar types of people. But anyway, I saw him and walked in, not because I assumed he could benefit from my Chinese language abilities as much as just an indescribable force I just felt, one mostly of a social nature. I went in and sat down with him and the representative, and before I knew it, I just spontaneously decided to sign up too and I walked out with my first ever gym membership today at 31 years old! Feels like a great first step. I’ve got good shoes for the gym. Now I just need a proper gym bag, some gym clothes, and a schedule that works for me and I hope to become a gym rat on occasion each week. Hope it won’t be a fire that burns out next month...or even next week. Hahahaha!

While you make valid points, it’s important to remember that not every film reaches every cinema. Also I don’t think vast majority of people go to cinema to support the director or the actors, but for entertainment.

Also i'm glad this thread is here but it's already petering out. What to do? The person who shut down the shoutbox has posted 10 times in 8 days. That's... good? I guess? Considering he posted a grand total of 225 times in literally 849 days before that, uh, well that's progress. Did i really go away for a week and miss absolutely nothing here except people talking about the new Korean movie that they stole?

Hmmmmmm to get drunk and create a ska thread or to not?! Lol I’ve never gotten into ska with the exception of a song or two on the PS One game, Street Sk8er. I think that was the way it was spelled, at least. Now that was a unique, arcade style skateboarding game I’d call underrated!

Hmmmmmm to get drunk and create a ska thread or to not?! I got (am) drunk, but only because the Braves game went long and I wouldn't call myself off the bottle while we plowed through extra innings. Either way I demand a Ska thread asap or I'm starting the revolution. (But don't expect me to contribute.)
