How pointless.

Can we please change the thread topic name? There were very few riots, and now it's almost exclusively giant peaceful protests.

Dylan Roof was arrested quietly after killing 9 African-Americans in a church one night. He was led into the back of a police car, unharmed, without incident. Can you IMAGINE what that would have been like if his name was Tyrone Johnson and he shot up a Southern Baptist church? Puhlease. For some reason, Showtime keeps airing the episode of Active Shooter about this scumbag and it made me remember this post. I don't understand what their angle is. I don't know if they feel like they're making a point about how white people commit atrocities and can be met with zero force if they surrender, or if they think they're honoring the victims of that massacre somehow. It seems like more of a slap in the face than anything.

So the BLM protests here in the UK have started a debate here about our colonial past and use of slaves. It’s part of our history that’s kind of swept under the carpet here. We don’t learn about it in schools. Sadly the debate has been hijacked and turned into a culture war, thanks to our media and the far right.
It started with BLM protestors a couple of weeks ago pulling down a statue of a slave trader in Bristol and throwing it into the harbour. It became huge news and now all our statues are being looked at to see whether the individual had a racist or otherwise problematic past. This led to someone graffitiing a statue of Winston Churchill, saying he was a racist.
Churchill is a hero to a lot of people here, particularly the nationalists/Brexit-y types who see him as “the reason we won the war and don’t all speak German”. So this led to far right protestors descending on London at the weekend to “defend his statue”. In the end they all got drunk, fought with the police and gave some incredibly embarrassing interviews:
Alongside this, some of our broadcasters have suddenly realised blackface is racist and the n-word isn’t cool in any context. So they’ve started pulling old TV shows from streaming services for containing offensive content. This has enraged our right wing media who are rolling out all the typical “political correctness gone mad” lines and stoking up divisions.
I know that symbolic progress is still some progress, but I feel it’s a real shame that the focus of this has become old statues and sitcoms from the 70s. It’s so predictable that our media would end up focusing on the lower level issues and part of me wonders if it’s not intentional. I just think it’s going to distract people from the real problems and create divisions where there didn’t need to be any.

I mean, we still have many statues and monuments to Jefferson Davis and Nathan Bedford Forrest here, it's just an easy first target but it's a good start. Also, to be fair, your country is pretty good shape if you average about 3 or 4 police killings in an entire year. Here in the U.S., it's about 1100.

I see your point, but I think there are two separate issues here: 1) Generic police brutality which is really a US thing 2) Systematic racism and not educating people about that part of the culture. In the case of UK it seems 2) is the one that is more focused on (if I understood correctly).

In the case of UK it seems 2) is the one that is more focused on (if I understood correctly). Yes definitely. Europe doesn't often have to confront racism directly as much as the U.S. (and, well, South Africa) quite literally because you don't have as many black people and of course because you didn't have chattel slavery of 4 million human beings only 150 years ago, nor the devastating effects of strictly racist laws of the 20th Century. But yeah, every single empire of Europe was built on slavery to a degree, and vile racism for centuries. I can absolutely see how it would be easy, in the U.K. for example, to just completely ignore the treatment of people of color for the sake of bettering the Kingdom. It's just part and parcel of global dominance. When I wrote my rambling angry review of 4 Little Girls recently, I began it with "The history of America is the history of white supremacy."
