Really enjoying Foscor and E-L-R lately, both bands had critically under appreciated records in 2019.

I'm secretly a big fan of the Alt Dance/ New Disco scene, bands like Friendly Fires do it for me, speaking of which their recent album is the tits.

I believe this is my 3rd time posting frequently about Between the Buried and Me, but it is insane how much I have been listening to Alaska, Colors, and the Great Misdirect recently. I had The Silent Circus on disc and thought I had imported it to my external hard drive long ago, but when I opened the BTBAM Silent Circus file, it was empty!!! Now I have to hunt down a quality upload of it somewhere. I’m also a bit hesitant about diving into their later albums, but I feel I should at this rate.
But on to Alaska, this is probably one of my top 10 albums of all time. It, along with Fear Factory’s Obsolete (A far inferior album, but a nostalgic fave of mine anyway), is one of those rare albums in which I can listen and name every song on it at the random drop of a needle. Every song has a unique identity and direction. Freaking fantastic album! “Selkies...” might be my favorite BTBAM track in total partly due to the epic melodic jam bit at the end that is so satisfying. The more grindy and mathy bits in the middle are also great.

I made a 2020 playlist and I'm adding every band that I discover this year in that playlist. Also I've only been listening to Turnover the last two days. Can't wait to see them in 2 months.

I don’t understand genre elitists who only limit themselves to one or two genres of music. Music to me is an escape and I listen to all sorts of genres depending on my mood, the weather, time of day, etc.
That’s one reason why I got out of the hardcore scene, I was going to shows three to four times a week and it was toxic because people would bash on everything that wasn’t youth crew or hardcore. You were deemed uncool and a poser if you listened to anything else. It to me seems like those people are truly missing out on a lot of fantastic artists/bands because of their close-minded way of thinking.

Remember when you first heard Metallica’s St. Anger album? I sure as hell do. I wasn’t very far into my metal journey, but I had already heard their classic albums at this time. St. Anger left a wickedly bizarre taste in my mouth. Most notably I hated the sound quality of that record, as it sounded super scrappy. Despite that fact, I did listen through the whole disc probably at least 30 times, like I did with all records I purchased back then. As with any disc you listen to enough times, elements of the record became more bearable and sometimes even enjoyable. But forever this album will never live up to the standards of Metallica in any era.
That all being said, I just went back and listened to a track today for fun, “Some Kind of Monster.” The track sucks, but the scrappy sound is nowhere near as grating as it was to be back then. I almost like its garage-like sound. Those trashy drums sound fun to my ears today. But the riffs...yikes! No good! The song itself was so attitude-y, but the material is just too lame to match the attitude. With me being a big thrash metal fan, especially familiar with most of the greats of the genre (Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth, Overkill, Destruction, Kreator, and many more), I can say St. Anger is nothing unusual. All of those bands released garbage in the middle of the careers. Perhaps Kreator released the least most garbage albums of the bunch, but I’m talking about Metallica here.
Was St. Anger a terrible album? I think so! Why did I go listen to it a bit after 15 years or so? I read a review that reminded me of some of the hilarious lyrics in the album. Good lord, I can’t believe they wrote those lyrics. It’s like the Attitude era Metallica, and whereas that worked for WWF back in the day, it didn’t for Metallica. Check out these lyrical winners from St. Anger and have a good laugh with me:
MY LIFESTYLE! DETERMINES MY DEATHSTYLE!
YOU FLUSH IT OUT, YOU FLUSH IT OUT!
GIT 'EM OUT MAH HEAD!
Not only do I not know the answer, I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THE QUESTION IS!
LOOKOUT MOTHERFUCKERS, HERE I COME!
Shoot me again, I ain't dead yet...
KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL!

I still really like the first track on that record. "Frantic," once you get beyond the trash can drums -- and the dumb lyric you posted -- is a bangin song.
