Lol nope. Isn't this supposed to be a part of the bigger monster universe movies? Like Godzilla/Kong?

I'll probably see this once a good leak comes out as with every Tom Cruise movie, not worth catching it in theater imo. And yeah, Universal is launching the Dark Universe, a laughable take on the whole multiple franchises in shared universe thing. Dracula Untold was supposed to be the starting point but they fucked it up and now pretend it never happened, haha. So far, they've announced a Bride of Frankenstein movie due for 2019 and an Invisible Man movie with Johnny Depp that is not yet dated.

Godzilla/Kong is its own thing, this was supposed to be a part of the "dark universe" which is a reboot of all the old Universal originals. Great idea on paper but yeah... I'm like the world's biggest Universal Monsters fan so everyone keeps looking to me now that this movie is out like "HEY NICK IT'S YOUR THING!!!!" but honestly I can't really bring myself to watch it. I know they are just going to butcher it. Bleh.

I mean, that's exactly what it is haha. It's a bunch of dumb executives at Universal like HOLY SHIT GUYS WE ARE GETTING MAULED AT THE BOX OFFICE! WHAT NOW?! The monsters are that studio's biggest stars, their superheroes in a way, so I see where they are coming from but they are just going about it the wrong way, of course. The originals are beloved because they pioneered the HORROR genre, they are trying to turn them into blockbusters when the fact of the matter is there really is no such a thing as a "blockbuster" horror movie. They just can't really exist on the same plane, their natures just naturally contradict each other. The only one I can REALLY think of that works on both levels is the original Alien. Having Tom Cruise just mow down a bunch of CGI monster shit with a big gun is not horror, it's action, and modern action fans don't give a shit about monsters that are 100 years old. Case closed.

Is this actually terrible or are people just shitting on it because it's a franchise that isn't Marvel? I like Cruise and the classic horror monsters, so I'll at least check it out when I can torrent it.

Five movies in thirteen years is apparently milking the franchise, but forty Marvel movies every year is cool. They're schlocky swashbuckling adventure movies, I don't know why they're scrutinized so much more than comic book tripe.

Superheroes are just "the thing" right now and audiences are cattle that think they know what's up when they don't. It's easy for them to "see through" other franchises because they don't have stuff they're super interested in. They'll think "ugh we dont need ANOTHER movie about pirates!" or "ugh we don't need ANOTHER monster movie!" but they are completely hooked on the franchises that spend 400 trillion dollars on marketing like Marvel or Star Wars because once again, audiences are cattle.

"fuck off with the sequels and remakes Hollywood" "oh cool a new trailer for The Avengers 27: Avenge This" I'm entirely sick of movie news being dominated by announcements of some chucklefuck appearing in the next Star Wars/Marvel movie. I'm not necessarily defending Universal's monsters thing because I haven't seen The Mummy or Dracula Untold (not sure if the latter counts anymore), but it sounds better on paper than pretty much any of the Marvel movies imo.

I'm with you 100% on all fronts there. Audiences think they are smart enough to avoid money-grab franchise films but certain ones just absolutely have them by the short hairs. They'll probably mosey right on down to see this weird new transformer movie too. People just don't understand the Universal Monsters anymore either, they're SO embedded into culture that kids and adults alike just see them as generic when in reality they are the reason that movies like Twilight even exist at all. Ads and pop culture don't constantly shove "the monsters" down people's throats so they just don't know about it, because that's how the general public finds movies/tv shows that they like nowadays. It's just shoved in their face and they're like "oooohhh colors!"
