As cool as Tolkien is, this is unnecessary. The lore is too complex, they would inevitably botch something or contradict the established lore. Also there's really no way they could do a better job than PJ so it's just silly to try. Doing a TV show would realistically be the most logical way of wading through all the history and lore, as they wouldn't feel constrained to tell the "cliff's notes" version of things in an hour every week and let things unfold naturally.

If they were to start from the beginning of middle-earth the first season would basically just be gods arguing. Creating a truly faithful TV show would require viewers to know a lot about Tolkien already, and let's just face it, people just want to be entertained. They don't wanna learn deep lore and understand character's different religious beliefs and stuff. The TV show would focus on like another ranger or something super typical, it would also probably feature dumb cameos that feel forced. Given that people talk such shit on The Hobbit franchise, I couldn't see a TV show getting high praise. Also the budget would just be through the fucking roof.

Never really got into LOTR, tbh. I have friends who love the books who told me how Tolkien is super descriptive, down to each fucking blade of grass lol, so I understand now how it wouldn't be feasible. Thanks man.

but with game of thrones end in sight, do you not think it would be perfect timing (in point of view of developers etc) to release an old yet new series to get the same fans on board? i personally think theres not enough GOOD fantasy films or tv shows, most are low budget, poor actors, whatever, but thats cus im a nerd on that stuff EDIT- i just read your post again so apologies for being a dingbat. Fair point. Having said that, I bet there's plenty of fantasy novels that are similar that could also be adapted given how popular GoT is. There are, Wheel of Time and Kingkiller Chronicles have had some serious rumors in the last year, with the latter being adapted by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Syfy tried out The Magicians a few years ago, the first season was really good but the second one fell flat to me. And Amazon is also working Good Omens I believe as a miniseries for 2018. It's a good time to be a nerd. But as for the new series I was seeing rumors that it's set to take place before the LoTR Trilogy so people are speculating they'll be diving into The Silmarillion which on one hand I'd be curious about because I love Tolkien's universe but I hate his writing style so I never go into it. On the other hand The Hobbit trilogy was so god awful that I'm skeptical about seeing anything else.

You had me at "Nic Cage". Guys, we all know the pre-sequel spin-off will be focused on Gandalf, naturally played by Dwayne Johnson.

I'd watch Dwayne Johnson as Gandalf as long as everyone plays it straight.

Amazon sent me the principal cast list this morning MIDDLE-EARTH AND THE FRANCHISE CASH-IN: Gandalf = Dwayne Johnson Saruman = Kevin Hart Bilbo = Post Malone Galadriel = the girl who plays 11 on Stranger Things Gimli = Jennifer Lawrence Legolas = Jonah Hill Tom Bombadil = Danny Trejo Sauron = Tupac Hologram Dumbledore = Terry Crews

Jennifer Lawrence is in here? Fuck it, I'm down to watch.
