So i'm sitting here at my desk on a Monday late afternoon/evening, working my way through the dozens of news and political blogs i like, then definitely hitting the important music sites, blogs, and of course this forum to see what silliness is going on.
And i found another like 5 or 6 bands today i like that i didn't know, and probably downloaded, i dunno, like 10 or 12 albums.
I'm pretty meticulous about tagging stuff right and having all my folders organized, so it takes some time, but i read a lot and watch a lot of news, and anyone that knows me here knows i'm also, like, a movie guy, so i'm watching about 10 films a week probably. And you gots to work to pays the bills, so i have other stuff to do. Admittedly i have no social life, so, like, that's cool.
Anyway so i look at my "download" folder, which has all the .zip and .rar files ready to extract and tag and get all up in my computer ready for rad listening. Just takes some work to get them there.
There are 388 album files sitting there.
388 goddamn albums i haven't even opened, unzipped, tagged, and listened to yet. I just spent hours doing this last week to like 40 albums probably. And there are 388 more.
Is this silly? Like, can (or should) you draw the line somewhere? Do any of you others have this albeit stupid problem? Should i, like, draw the line somewhere? It's going to come to the point where i won't listen to the same song more than once this whole year because i have so many new things to get to. I don't even consider my tastes eclectic, really not at all. I listen to loud obnoxious metalcore, hardcore, progressive metal, dubstep and trappy electronic, and things in-between all that. Many of you listen to things i have zero interest in.
And yet here i am! Still with like 400 albums i haven't even unzipped and looked it. I looked at a few of the files, i don't even remember like a third of them or what that band sounded like.
I dunno, maybe this is a whole lot of nothing. But i wanted to see if anyone else here had this "problem," if you can even call it that. Maybe i just like quantity over quality. I'm not sure.

This is something I deal with often, but I dont think i'd call it a problem. what ends up happening is it ends up on the immortal Ipod classic and I find it 6 months later. youre always going to feel overwhelmed, especially if you have a very diverse music taste.

Of course it is. I find myself adding five new albums to my media library a day, on average. Luckily it’s streaming, so I gave up on the tagging. I have a pretty broad taste in music, which makes me indecisive in what to listen to when I finally have the time for it and there are just too many artists, albums and genres that I wanna dig into.
I follow some other music sites and see some people happily sticking to mostly one certain type of music and really taking the time to digest it. I cannot stop feeling really jealous about it.
I try to force myself a bit into listening to albums on repeat, thus only going to the next album when I feel that I have a strong opinion about it. And I regularly have to tell myself that I can take the time, don’t make a fuss about it in my head, and just can’t listen to it all.

No, it's not silly. I'm actually going through the same problem, as I'm still listening to material released last year that I never got to listen to before, all while trying to find and listen to material released this year that I might be interested in, as the year end lists don't populate themselves. Thinking about it, you could draw the line somewhere, but not too harshly, as you run the risk of musically atrophying, and then you'll never find new music. Maybe try to institute limits and quotas so as to give you a chance and a goal to work towards, so that you stand a realistic chance of listening to the majority of music you're acquiring.

I think it's all about taking time to check things out and if you don't think they're a banger, just delete it and move on. My ipod is literally only songs I love and couldn't live without. I think having lots and lots of music to choose from is good because you'll end up only re-listening to records that truly move you and have you coming back for more.

I have a strange/really silly take on this. It's not so much to much music, if theres an album/band i love that i dont listen to for a while i feel something close to (not the same but similar) not talking to an old friend. So the more new stuff i check out the less i listen to the stuff i already love. But then the bonus of listening to something you love for the first time in ages so works both ways i guess

Thanks for your responses. Just curious what others do in this situation. Trying to keep it in check, but, yeah #firstworldproblems for sure.

It comes down to how you enjoy listening to and discovering music. That huge backlog of albums isn’t a problem unless you let it be.
Personally, I wish I carved out more time to discover new music. A lot of the time I just go back to the artists I already know. And some of that is because I’m overwhelmed by how much music is out there, I don’t know where to start.

... some of that is because I’m overwhelmed by how much music is out there, I don’t know where to start. Exactly, yes that's exactly how i felt... so my mind, fine-tuned with an addictive personality, goes all out downloading and streaming everything i can get my hands on, almost for a FOMO effect. I didn't know where to start either so i just decided to suck up everything i might remotely like. I'm listening to music now that i downloaded in early December and didn't even remember doing so.

If you don’t enjoy this way of discovering music then maybe you should change your habits. Delete the backlog you’ve built up and decide on a less stressful approach. You might miss out on some good music but so what, there’s an endless amount out there. I can kind of identify with what you’re saying and I know it isn’t easy. I’m like this with some things outside stuff music. The completist tendency is strong.

I guess I have this problem. I just looked at my downloads folder because of this and I have 20 unzipped albums haha. thanks for reminding me. but I usually just throw them in iTunes and when I'm working on school stuff ill just shuffle it. I probably have never even listened to at least half my library and it keeps adding. ill download things because I think the name is cool, or members of another band I like are in, or they toured with a band I liked, or especially when it comes to noise albums ill download the whole discography of different labels just because. I guess I'm saying is that most of my library is trash but at least you have a something new to listen to when you want to have it,.
I have everything from brutal slam to electronic to folk to noise. Its a crazy world when shuffle is on. sometimes ill throw one or two albums I've never heard on my phone and just play them for the next month. sometimes I really hate them and sometimes it grows on me.

Ever since I started Applying eMusic I've been overwhelmed lol. It's just too easy to get in a hole downloading every album that looks good. I gotta chill!

I limit myself to how much music I can have based on my phone's capacity. When I finally got that 128GB micro SD it was weirdly liberating in that way. On the flip side, I've cut out a lot of stuff that I didn't listen to as much or hasn't excited me as much, so even though it's been sad letting a few of these wonderful artists go, I only really forgot the ones that didn't leave an impression.
