... some of that is because I’m overwhelmed by how much music is out there, I don’t know where to start. Exactly, yes that's exactly how i felt... so my mind, fine-tuned with an addictive personality, goes all out downloading and streaming everything i can get my hands on, almost for a FOMO effect. I didn't know where to start either so i just decided to suck up everything i might remotely like. I'm listening to music now that i downloaded in early December and didn't even remember doing so. Same here, although I don't really stress out too much about it. It kind of makes me indecisive about what to listen to, but I'm trying to be fine about missing out on a lot of stuff, especially if that gets me to enjoying what I do listen to more. I sometimes delete half of my saved albums as well. It's cathartic...

I definitely don't stress out about having to much music, but on the other hand I do periodically clear out shit I've downloaded that is garbage or I simply don't listen to anymore. I will say though if just randomly downloading music is causing that much stress maybe changing the behavior or thought process behind it may help. Just my 2 cents.

lol know exactly what your saying. To remedy the situation, about a year ago I decided to only put one album by the same band on my IPOD to help cycle through releases. I usually fill it with things I wanna check out and then delete what did not stick out to add new jams. The IPOD is more gym music which tends to be everything on the side of hardcore, and in my car is usually more metal; yes even some nu-metal. There's a copy of Limp Bizkit in there with no shame. Chocolate starfish...we just keep on rollin' baby.

I recently bought a 2 tb time capsule for this very problem, i spend at least 4 hours every Monday organizing my folders and replacing music on 2 iPods. I constantly change up what’s on them as I use them for my vehicle and gym visits. I dunno if it’s a problem so much as an addiction.

Absolutely. This happens to me with movies. I want to watch something but I then want to watch everything and nothing all at once and get pissy.

Since I mostly only upload stuff I have listened to and enjoyed, I have a lot to listen to everyday. Because work is getting a huge part of my time now I don't really have much time to listen to music anymore. That's why I'm lacking of uploads currently too.

An update. My initial post claimed thus: Anyway so i look at my "download" folder, which has all the .zip and .rar files ready to extract and tag and get all up in my computer ready for rad listening. Just takes some work to get them there. There are 388 album files sitting there. 388 goddamn albums i haven't even opened, unzipped, tagged, and listened to yet. I just spent hours doing this last week to like 40 albums probably. And there are 388 more. And now? There are 830 downloaded files in that folder, still unzipped and unlistened to. I haven't listened to the same song on this computer for an entire year. Might be a record. That's all, carry on.

I have missed this thread somehow until now. Well, I have a few thoughts, as you probably know that I am also suffering from this dilemma.
-When obtaining and listening to new releases feels like a chore, it does begin to become less satisfying to me, and I recognize it is like an addiction, but without all the pleasure. However, I'm finding great difficulty in refraining from scouting the web for more bands that sound like what I want to hear.
-I also generally hear most music I obtain once and then never hear it again, and have a huge catalogue of music I'll never hear again. If I keep up with new releases forever, I'll never actually appreciate truly enough what gems I do have.
-Old releases please me more than the new ones. I currently face the issue that I desperately want to have a full Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse discography listening binge, but knowing how much time it takes and how many new albums I "need" to get through keeps me from ever doing something I know I truly enjoy.
-There is just too much music out there, and I have to come to a point of understanding that I'll never hear it all, and that it's okay. I am sitting on a gold mine of amazing music, and multiple listens is the right way to appreciate what you have.
-I never think quantity over quality is the right answer, but it still occurs a lot, which I believe is usually just symptomatic of addiction. Perhaps when next year starts, I will try to just focus on these albums I have that I've been itching to listen to rather than continue my old pattern.
-Modern era TDM has slowed down a lot with music uploads, and this has directly impacted me in a positive way in that I don't just find everything I want here, and I have to look harder for stuff I want. And sometimes I don't find what I'm looking for. And the funny thing about all of that is that EVENTUALLY I MOVE ON AND FORGET ABOUT WHAT ALBUM I WAS HUNTING DOWN.
The world is full of music. My plan next year is to work on improving my quality of music appreciation, and just listen to what I truly want to listen to. If I need something new or different, I can look for it, but I need to satisfy my listening cravings with what I already have acquired too. Maybe "true happiness comes from within" applies here sometimes? Hahaha

I used to make playlists and put songs in there but now after a while I just got tired of hearing them over and over.
I started listening to Spotify's daily mix or other playlists and discover new bands/songs on the daily which I'll add to my own playlist. It's a fun and refreshing way of learning about new music.

I've got to a point with Spotify where I'm adding about 10 albums a week, and spending that week exclusively listening to these 10, then whichever ones I'm not bothered about returning to get unsaved and I hit repeat on the process next week. So it's a problem for listening to stuff continually throughout the year, but for getting through your 'back log' it works.
Having the ability to listen to music at work is essential though for this.

Also Andrew, if you're in your 30s like me (Which I think you are), then you'll remember a time when buying CDs was the only real way to hear new music (Until Napster and all that sh*t came along), so having access to music at your fingertips feels like we've progressed way too quickly for our listening habits to keep up. We gotta progress with the times or get left behind.

I love(d) them! Now that i have ability to get any music, at an even higher quality... man, it's just so hard to turn away from.

i have a shitton of music aswell...the problem for me is, as i started downloading/streaming so much music, i started to forget about other great albums super fast...or even remember the lyrics.
