stringypoo, what compilation is it? I’ve been trying to find one that had been released this year (2018), and nobody’s got it. It’s called “Winds Of Time: The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal 1979-1985” This one is called Roksnax. Three bands on it. Released in December, 1980. Considering some of the picks, I’m surprised they left out Charger, Samurai, Traitors Gate, and a few others, but yeah, this comp would be awesome to have! I find it much harder to find links for traditional metal and nwobhm so good luck! I’ll keep my eyes peeled too.

Traitor’s Gate: Here’s a song I love by another band whose career stopped very quickly. Not only that, but the singer here was replaced rather quickly, twice, and then three years later they quit. They came back in 2017, however, and released an album, which I haven’t heard yet. I heard a track, but I wasn’t drawn into it like this old material. Definitely going to check out their new one eventually though.

Visigoth was pretty good; the instrumentation and technicality are on point, but the only quibble I have is that the vocalist sounds “normal”, you know? Almost like a dime-a-dozen type of vocalist, where his performance really doesn’t stand out. Still liked the album and I’ll put it into my honorable mentions list for this year, but I don’t foresee myself coming back to this too often in the future. Thanks for the rec!!!!

Traveler: Here’s a new one for me. From Canada (which totally brings a debate if this can be classified as NWOBHM, but stylistically it fits very well), these guys captured the sound of the NWOBHM era effortlessly. Bandcamp is a beautiful thing, guys. Never would have found them without that app. This is top shape metal of the style. If you like this style, or are interested in it, this is a great place to start.

If you listen to the metal massacre tape that metallica were on then you can hear that all those bands were basically trying to sound like all the NWOBHM bands. Here is one of my favs. This album is a belter aswell.

I mean, they were huge. Funny thing about the NWOBHM was that it was such a short lived thing in which if you were not well established by 1983-1985, people didn’t care about your efforts for the scene, even though maybe the band forming or releasing material late might actually kick ass. I think that it is because of this timing issue that there is much to discover within the scene and there are likely many hidden gems to be uncovered. It’s funny. In my life I have never been a fan of Def Leppard. But I listened to that track and I couldn’t find a single thing wrong with it. The band really are a tight act. I guess they’re just not a band I care about, but they sure did everything right, made well obvious from that track.

I think that if you weren't established by 82 even then no-one cared. by 83 Metallica and Anthrax etc were on the scene and then everything went nuts from there.

Overkill are NOT a NWOBHM band. But I can’t help myself from posting a song from Overkill’s first album, Feel the Fire, from the year 1985. This song, “Kill At Command” just bleeds with NWOBHM influences. A true testament to the influence and power of the movement from the UK. Also, that guitar solo near the end is just straight up ear-candy!

clazza, have you heard this new album by Traveler? I did post it earlier in this thread, but not sure who checked it out. The reason I am posting this song from it is simply because I have to tell you that this is probably my favorite album released from this first quarter of the year, which says a lot because this year has been really great so far. Canada doing NWOBHM exceptionally well here. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this band.

I will share a very unpopular opinion: The previous album, The Grinding Wheel, is currently an album I feel more attached to. But the funny part is that I listened to the Grinding Wheel a week after it came out and then felt bored by it and put it away for a long time. Came back to it months later and really got into it. The new album didn’t bore me at all, and it’s got some really killer tracks on it. But two listens isn’t really sufficient to judge an album. This weekend I plan to listen to it more. The difference is that I’ve looped each of the first four albums this week more than 4 times each already. Hahaha
