Speaking of which, as I unzip and catalog them now (ones from July 2018), I'm finding at least a half dozen of these bands have released another album I didn't even know about... since I first downloaded whatever I have. Crazy. You old man, you.

I'm a 32 year old who's been listening to metal music for 17 years. I still don't know the difference between Post Hardcore and Metalcore and this point I'm afraid to ask.

Okay, admittedly I generally know all of my metal genres really well. But post-hardcore and metalcore often sound similar to me. But I guess at its core, I relate metalcore more to metal as a broad genre and post-hardcore to the punk, hardcore, and post rock scene, all of which aren’t quite metal. When I think about those things, I feel I can mostly classify the two when listening to them. But not always.

On my computer, here are all the genres i have for this style of music: rock, hard rock, metal, hardcore, grindcore. That's it. I force everything into those names and i've been doing it for 15 years probably without much difficulty.

Although I sometimes like identifying bands by their genre, I don’t think it’s important or anything to get it right in conversation. But I do really appreciate knowing my genres and even better, websites that label bands correctly, as it helps me sift through the countless releases all the time without wasting too much of my time listening to bands I’ve not heard of before that don’t fit the styles I want to listen to. In this way, I think genre labels are helpful.

I’ve never been a big fan of brutal death metal (aside from Suffocation, as we commonly refer to them as brutal death metal, especially when discussing their oldest records), but there are some new brutal death records from this year that are absolutely killing it! I’ll have to post some in the death metal thread soon. Disentomb are definitely way up there, as well as Consumed by Vultures, Cercenated Flesh, Visceral Disgorge, Demiurgon, Corpseflesh, Disowning, and a few more. I’ll try to put together a post introducing these in the death metal thread if I find some spare time this afternoon. I haven’t been this excited for BDM ever before.

If anyone is in any way a dabbler with Brutal Death Metal, or even just a little curious from time to time, I just posted in the death metal thread my list of about 6 great new albums from this year that are highly worth checking out, especially the first few in the list. I am not a huge brutal death metal fan, but these albums got me a bit more interested at the time, and I thought that it’s possible some of you will actually appreciate these more than you’d expect.
One thing that really got to me when getting into these was just thinking about how intense and amazing these drummers are. Some BDM bands use programmed drums, but kudos to those who don’t, because they tend to demonstrate some incredible skill and endurance. I almost want to create a drummer appreciation thread right now. Haha
