This and everything after it. Opeth now exists solely so dumb metal nerds can jerk themselves off over how "eclectic" their taste is. Absolutely horrendous. Contagion was pretty bad, too, but Incisions is essentially AIDS in music form.

I'm not so familiar with their other releases, but this album kills imo.

Yeah, IDT was my favourite metalcore band at that time too. I loved Forever Scorned and The Caitiff Choir. Some about Sirens didn't hit the spot with me. It felt a little flat. I agree it totally trumps Lividity. Scorned and Caitiff are still so heavy. Sometimes when I wanna get into a band's softer or more mainstream records, I'll create a playlist with the good, older heavy stuff as well as the new album and I'll listen to it on shuffle. I find that for some reason, it really helps as long as there aren't any drastic member changes. In Hearts Wake is a great example of a band that it actually worked on. Thought everything after Divination was "pussy shit" (lol) but once I mixed those more reserved songs in with the heavy ones, I really began to see their place within the band's sound. Perhaps I need to give that a shot. I'll see if it works for me...

I loved the first two records from FBTMOF. I remember when The Always Open Mouth came out, it kinda disappointed me. After some time and my tastes maturing musically, I came to love that album and this one. They both offer a different side to Fear Before which is cool to hear. It's a little avant-garde and experimental. i didn't like mouth too much at first either, now that i think of it. i really grew on me tho, i think it's likely their best (not fav) album. s/t should have been called 'the always open mouth-lite'. Yeah, it definitely is their most well structured and produced album. I think the S/T felt watered down compared to that record... I just miss their dynamic of mixing sassy post hardcore with chaotic / mathcore. Art Damage is flawless.

This one should be pretty unanimous lol Wait, why? I don't get it. What's wrong with that record? Yeah it's not as good as the first, but you're acting like it's some abomination or something. Let's see. It's a massive step down in quality in pretty much every way: - Every member left except Alex, and Sumerian dropped them while they were writing this due to "lack of confidence". - Totally different riffing style. Older record's riffing was reminiscent of Swedish death metal like At the Gates and classic metalcore bands like It Dies Today, Dead to Fall and I Killed the Prom Queen. The new riffing style was way too processed and angular, sounded like they were trying to get Sumerian's attention again or capitalize on the "progressive" popularity at the time with bands like VoM and BoO. - The clean vocals are not only far more prominent, they are far more effeminate and just worse. Sounds like the guy is just belting shit out through his nose the whole time. It's a mess. The clean vocalist sounds like he would be a much better fit in like an Oh Sleeper or Dream On, Dreamer type band rather than an actual metalcore one. - The production is just shit on a shoe. Every aspect of it sounds flat and rushed. It's just a fucking rushed, budget record from a "band" desperately trying to hold onto what they had when they really needed to just wait a couple years and try again like they are doing now. An album best left forgotten. Honestly I bet if I asked Alex about it now he would shit on it even harder than me.

I'm not so familiar with their other releases, but this album kills imo. Interesting. Without any other reference, maybe I'd like it more too, yeah. I love their last album with the original vocalist, When Everything Falls (2005), and then they did like 3 albums with the second vocalist, and the 3rd, Attack of the Wolf King (2010) really felt like they finally found their stride and changed things up a bit. SO when they came back with an album utilizing both, I thought I'd love it, and it fell a little flat for me.
