Quite good Oscar shortlisted doc, but a little overly long and with some iffy pacing by the end. Was expecting some cinematic flourish in the end, a la the anger from a Michael Moore film, but it finished with a declension instead. Not bad. You could do a lot worse when it comes to real, truthful political history. letterboxd.com/v9733xa/film/the-edge-of-democracy/

One of the sickest documentaries I've seen. Couldn't stop watching it and binged it and it made me feel super weird in the end. I too enjoyed this when I watched it, well I'm not sure if enjoy is the right word, but you know what I mean. Fascinating case, I don't want to say too much for spoiler reasons. One thing I will say though, I wish they included more cautionary tales of internet which hunts, a lot of times they don't end well.

Quality doc about the namesake Senator and his witch-hunt era in the 1950s. Excellent if you're not well-versed in the man or time period, kinda a Wikipedia-style film if you already know most of it. Link to watch in my review: letterboxd.com/v9733xa/film/mccarthy/

Stunning visuals and story. The long shots Sam Mendes used are insane. I can understand why it's a contender for the oscars and got two golden globes.

Here's what I've watched so far in 2020... Utterly brutal martial arts flick. As intense as The Raid but seriously lacking in the plot department. 3.5/5
This was incredibly moving. I've watched a few documentaries on the Syrian civil war and every time it just leaves me despairing for the situation and the people caught in the conflict.
Bizarre Estonian horror movie. The vibe reminded me a little of The Lighthouse and The Witch. 3.5/5
A typically brilliant Kore-eda family drama. 4/5
Working my way through Sion Sono's back catalogue. I'm starting to think I might need a break from him as the tropes felt a bit too familiar. It wasn't helped by the fact that my digital rental looked like a VHS rip. 3.5/5
Went to see this last night after it finally got a UK cinema release. Have to say, I didn't enjoy it at all. It's really rare that there's a film I'm hyped for and end up not liking it. I felt like I had to work way too hard to keep up with what was going in the first act. The pacing was agonisingly slow, I didn't connect with the characters at all, and it tried way too hard to insert symbolism. At least the hour-long tracking shot was technically impressive. 2.5/5

Glad to hear it gets the tbp seal of approval. Man, when I saw that it had an early screening at my cinema yesterday a day before release I got myself a ticket straight away. I already looked up some behind the scenes footage and they only did like 50/60 takes. And some takes took about a maximum of 6 minutes long. Also saw that a lot of extra's improvised/made mistakes which are also in the film. But we can talk about that when you see it (it doesn't look like a mistake which is good). Seal of approval signs for everyone to use in this thread would be fun to use tbh. Movie poster > review > seal of approval (happy face if good, sad face when bad, or neutral face). TBP seal of approval Certified crowdkill potential: 1 to 5* Edit: sorry, I'm super bored at work so I'm letting my thoughts go wild.

So, at the end of the year when we pool our best films of the year and choose a winner, do we call it “The Suhoney Awards”?

Very very good. A little issue with the utterly implausible story, but otherwise this is an experience for the movies that you've got to see. Some jaw-dropping shit. letterboxd.com/v9733xa/film/1917/

I liked this, but didn't get the "this movie will make you so anxious that you'll disembowel yourself in the theater" reaction. Adam Sandler is, of course, good when he tries and Kevin Garnett was surprisingly decent, too. Also Julia Fox is insanely hot. 4/5.

Delightfully dark and weird, this is streaming on Amazon Prime and it's up for a Spirit Award for Best Screenplay. Strange and funny and a gutsy one-joke premise with an orthodox religion at its center. Well done. letterboxd.com/v9733xa/film/to-dust/

Wow, a knockout debut from Gabrielle Brady, one of the best docs of the year is about the Christmas Island detention centre operated by Australia out of the public eye, like their version of Guantanamo. Stellar and affecting stuff. Watch this on Amazon Prime please. letterboxd.com/v9733xa/film/island-of-the-hungry-ghosts/
